An elderly couple—Ramesh Chawla and his wife, Rajni Chawla—along with their housemate, Sheila, were brutally murdered using a screwdriver. When the police arrived at the scene, locals had already apprehended a suspect; it appeared the crime was committed with the intent to steal. The police immediately took him into custody and brought him to the station for questioning. The accused has been identified as Ramkumar. He has been living in the city area of Dehradun district for the past four or five years; originally from the Bijnor region, he works as a plumber. A review of CCTV footage clearly shows this individual entering and leaving the house alone... During preliminary questioning, the individual stated that he had been called that morning for plumbing work. He had been visiting the house for plumbing tasks over the past two years... The forensic team that visited the scene confirmed that such work had indeed been performed and recovered the tools he used for the job, which have been seized by the police. Prima facie, he stated that a dispute arose over payment; when he asked for his dues, he was offered a lesser amount, which escalated the conflict. He initially left the house but later returned with the intent to commit murder and robbery. A gold chain was recovered from his pocket. The police have immediately registered a case of murder coupled with robbery. He will be taken into custody and subsequently remanded to judicial custody, and the strictest possible legal action will be taken against him... This incident was committed by a single individual, and we condemn this extremely gruesome and heinous murder; I assure you that the Dehradun district police will ensure the strictest possible punishment is handed down..."
